Free example essay on Taj Mahal:
Taj Mahal is one of the eight wonders of the world. The Taj is the most beautiful monument built by the Mughals. Which are the Muslim rulers of India. The Taj Mahal is built from white marble. To many people the Taj Mahal is a “symbol of eternal love”.
Shan Jahan, the prince of the royal Mughal, got married to Mumtaz Mahal in 1612. She was not his first wife but among the rest she his favorite, having fourteen children. She died in 1613 because while giving birth child.
When Mumtaz Mahal was about to die she asked for four promises from the emperor which was to:
– for him to build her the Taj
– for him to get married again
– for him to be kind to their children
– for him to visit the tomb on her death anniversary
He kept the first two promises.
The construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1631 and was completed twenty-two years about that. Twenty thousand people were employed to work on it. The material was brought in from all over India and central Asia and it took a fleet of 1000 elephants to transport it to the site. The cost of making this was 40,000,000 rupee.
To make the Taj Mahal the people had to buy a lot of resources. White marble was brought from Makrana, black marble from Surat, Sandstone from Siki and semi- precious stones from Tibet, Russia and Peru. Some of these stones include opal, corneliabs, lapis, turquoise, chrysolite, sapphires and bloodstones.
The structure includes of a main gateway, an elaborate garden, a mosque (to the left), a guesthouse (to the right), and several other palatial buildings. Outside of the gate there were a number of mosques and small tombs of sandstone and marble, inside them would be other wives of Shan Jahan.
The Taj Mahal is a square building topped by five rounded marble domes. At each corner stands a slender tower, or minaret. Behind the Taj Mahal the river Jamuna runs behind it.
The style of the Taj Mahal was Indian Islamic architecture. The facades are in great surface details. On the wall there are decoration. Calligraphy, paintings and delicate had engraves.
I personally thought the technique of painting on the walls was quit fascinating. This is how they would do it: a thin layer of colour pigment would be put on top of a white plaster surface. A design would be drawn onto it. They would then scrape off the colour. This was called ‘incised painting’
Hard-stone carving existed in India and some Islamic countries. Looking at the pictures of the Taj Mahal, I think to myself it must be a fabulous skill to be able to carve marble. The craftsmen must had extreme talent to be able decorate something so beautifully.
Besides architectural features and the elaborate decoration of the Taj Mahal, there are many additional features, which make the atmosphere look so pleasant and pretty. The facades are not exactly at a right angle with the plinth, but are slightly angled.
Some of the features I think that does this would be the background and the marble. The marble looks so natural and when the light reflects it must look marvelous. With the shades of the white marble changing colour.
Something fascinating that I did not notice till I was researching was that the Taj Mahal is symmetrical. I think that looked very affective. I like the way the architect used different lines and shapes. I especially liked the arch. Having all these lines gives the building some character and a mood.
Today, Sahah Jahan and his queen, Mumtaz Mahal are both entombed in the “dream in marble.” Many people say that the best time to see the Taj Mahal is in the light of the full moon, when the white walls gleam like pearls.
