Research Paper on Assisted Reproductive Technology

Assisted reproductive technology is a good topic to write your research paper on.

Assisted reproductive technology, also known as artificial insemination or assisted reproduction, is a medical procedure to induce pregnancy.

Artificial insemination is applied to couples wishing to have children but have been unsuccessfully trying for a long time (for over a year) to get pregnant, to help to have offspring. In over 90 percent of the couples involved, there are physical causes for infertility.

A controversial pioneer of assisted reproductive technology is Berthold P. Wiesner (1901-1972), who ran a fertility clinic in London’s Harley Street with his partner Mary Barton (1940-1960), in which women mainly from the middle and upper classes with infertile men received donor sperm. (Significant parts of the donated semen Wiesner had to contribute himself, which is why he is now regarded as a child- richest person with an estimated 600 descendants who ever lived because of lack of time social acceptance.)

In 1978, Louise Joy Brown, the first begotten in the test tube, also known “test tube baby” was born. By 2006, about three million babies worldwide have been born this way – 200,000 babies alone in 2002.

Sperm donations are not regulated by any special laws. They were still up to 73 European Medical Assembly in 1970. Among other European countries, Germany had approximately 20,000 children born in 2003 after insemination, in vitro fertilization (IVF) or ICSI born, which is about two percent of all children born in total. By comparison, in Denmark, the country with the world’s highest rate of conceived by artificial insemination children, the rate was 3.9 percent, almost twice as high in 2005.

Assisted reproductive technology means the fertilization of the egg with sperm, which takes place outside the body. The required semen is collected by masturbation (a partner or donor sperm) or (for functional impotence) is taken directly in the testicles.

There are various methods of artificial insemination:

  • In vitro fertilization (IVF): An egg is fertilized by sperm in vitro – outside the body.
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection ( ICSI) : inferior sperm is injected into the egg.
  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI): Semen is placed in the woman uterus during the fertile days.

Both sperm and eggs can be stored up to bring about artificial insemination upon cooling to 77 K (liquid nitrogen).

With single and especially lesbian women the cup method is used, in which donated sperm is placed in the in the vagina. As homologous insemination, the fertilization is indicated with the sperm of a spouse or partner of a close-knit partnership. It is approved in most states (e.g., Germany, Austria, and Italy).
