Davy Crockett, born 17 August 1786 in Greene County, Tennessee, died 6 March 1836 at the Battle of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, was an American folk hero and politician (Whig), who represented Tennessee in the U.S. Congress, in 1827-1831 and 1833-1835. He was an outspoken opponent of President Andrew Jackson and his policies.

The Crocketts are originating in Ireland, descendants of Sir Croquetagne a Huguenot captain in custody of Louis XIV, whose name was anglicized. David Crockett was the fifth child in a family of nine, and has not received an elaborate education. He was the son of John Crockett who kept a tavern and was a local notable.

Widower of Mary Finley, nicknamed Polly (1788-1815), who gave birth to three children, he remarried Elizabeth Patton in 1816 and has four children with her. He was a Freemason.

In the 1830s, during the Civil War, almanacs depict Davy Crockett in humorous and grotesque tales. He symbolized the Almighty pioneer who overcomes wild animals and Indians. His image becomes that of an ambassador of Manifest destiny, which he never was; the parliamentary Crockett opposed the leader of his party and the deportation of Indians.

At the end of the XIX th century, Davy Crockett is the hero of a play played at least 2000 times in the United States and the United Kingdom.

Since 1909, many films and television series have recounted the life of Davy Crockett, including a series of five episodes of the Walt Disney Company in 1954. Crockett was incarnate, among others, by John Wayne in the first film Alamo that he realized in 1960.

He became the symbol of the American West.

In 1956, Disneyland offered in the section of the park called Frontierland, a small museum on the character. Wax figurines actual sizes of Fess Parker and Buddy Ebsen, the actors who play the heroes of the series produced by Walt Disney Pictures were presented in an Alamo decor. The museum closed quickly but the wax models were moved on Tom Sawyer Island nearby and have been visible for several decades.

There is a statue of Davy Crockett in Tennessee. The American history books mention his life and adventure. Theodore Roosevelt founded the Boone and Crockett Club in the late XIXth century.
