Free research paper example on Decision Making:
Decisions we make today will define what our life and the lives of others will become. Keep that in mind the next time you’re faced with a decision. As insignificant as it may seem at the time, your choices are always important. If these decisions are so critical, then how do we make sure they are correct? Critical thinking is the procedure we use to aid our decision making process. In the following paragraphs I will discuss the relationship between these two topics and discuss how they have affected my own life. Critical thinking is defined as careful, deliberate determination of whether we should accept, reject, or suspend judgment about a claim, and the degree of confidence with which we accept or reject it (Moore 192). This includes questioning not only the validity of the information presented, but also our preconceived conceptions towards this issue. Josh Billings states ain’t what a man don’t know that makes him a fool, but what he knows that ain’t so(qtd. in Korn).
In the terms of the University of Phoenix coursework, critical thinking focuses on questioning. They want you to dig for information utilizing critical questioning. Anyone can soak up information that is given to them and add it to there knowledge base, but is this the correct data? There are many fatal flaws which critical questioning can reveal. Identifying the reasons that support the conclusion is one of the main factors in determining the legitimacy of the claim. Politicians and advertising firms are infamous for stretching the truth to generate a following. Decision making is defined as the process of generating and applying criteria to select from among seemingly equal alternatives (UV). For example, a manager is faced with decision making multiple times per day. He or she must analyze all of the information presented and make an educated decision based on the advantages and disadvantages of each choice. The University of Phoenix text concentrates on locating the information channels needed to make that decision. As a manager you must have an organizational structure in place to allow the unimpeded flow of information. Critical information will not always come to you. At times you must get your hands dirty and dig up the facts yourself. Once you have gathered enough information, you can then analyze the data and make an informed decision. They go on to discuss the many pitfalls that will affect a managers decision making process. Previous experience may help in some situations, but it can also lead to narrow vision where they may not be open to other possibilities. Decisions gone badly can affect the outcome of future issues. Many managers in this situation will want to justify those past decisions and can fall into a ring of failure. Pressures such as deadlines and cost factors may also cause erroneous judgment. As I stated earlier, critical thinking and decision making go hand in hand. Successful decision making can’t be done without utilizing critical thinking. One must question the source of information for its legitimacy. Once this has been determined you can evaluate the information and make the informed decision.
