Randal Howard “Rand” Paul, born January 7, 1963 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, is an American Republican politician and ophthalmologist. He is known as the son of Ron Paul, and as a prominent personality in the Tea Party movement. His political philosophy he defines as constitutional conservatism. Paul represents the state of Kentucky in the U.S. Senate since 3 January 2011.

Paul grew up in Texas and attended Baylor University in Waco, Texas between 1981 and 1984. He graduated in 1988 from medical school at Duke University in North Carolina. In 1990, he married Kelley Ashby and the couple moved in 1993 to Kentucky where Paul opened his private medical practice.

In 1994, Rand Paul formed Kentucky Taxpayers United (KTU). As a lobby group KTU urged politicians to always vote against tax increases.

On 16 December 2007 on the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, Rand Paul appeared at Faneuil Hall in Boston in support of Ron Paul and called for something that CNN called a “modern day revolution.” Paul gained his fame as a primary candidate Ron Paul’s son. He was actively involved in his father’s campaign in the Republican primaries for the presidential election in the U.S. in 2008; among others, he traveled to Montana in connection with the promotion. “Revolution” was the slogan used in Ron Paul’s presidential campaign.

Rand Paul announced August 5, 2009 that he would run for the Senate election in 2010. In the Republican primary election in May 2010, he won by a clear margin. Immediately after winning the party’s nomination, Paul appeared with controversial comments concerning civil rights legislation.

Rand Paul advocates for the unconditional right to bear arms and is an abortions opponent. He is committed to the naturalization of illegal immigrants. The penalties for drug abuse he considers to be strong and advocate the legalization of marijuana for medical purposes.

Rand Paul is considered “anti-interventionist,” who has criticized the invasion of Iraq, spoke out against a military intervention in Libya and was an important figure in the rejection of an intervention in the civil war in Syria. This, he reasoned, among other things, by suggesting that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was protecting Christians, while the opposition attacking Christians. He also refused to arm the opposition.

Paul represents the constitutional position that the President needs the approval of Congress for any military action.

He is also against Barack Obama’s military aid to Egypt and believes that the money should instead be spent on infrastructure projects in the United States.

As one of only four Republican senators, he agreed to the appointment of Chuck Hagel as the new U.S. Secretary of Defense in February 2013.
