He was not against slavery itself, but he argued against the extension of slavery into the territories. He was not an abolitionist, even though he morally opposed slavery. In the debates against Douglas, Lincoln attempted to prove that Douglas did not favor political equality for blacks. Even though he lost the debates, they gave him a lot of national attention. While in the legislature, Lincoln made his first public speaking on slavery. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation, on January 1,1863, that declared forever free those slaves within the confederacy. Twenty-three years after Abraham Lincoln and Dan Stone filed a protest and when Lincoln was nominated for president, slavery became a greater issue. When Lincoln was nominated, he said that his protest in the legislature still expressed his position on slavery, even after all of those years.

Lincoln was an unsuccessful Illinois lawyer for twenty years, before he became president. The most unsuccessful part was mostly just for financial reasons. Abraham Lincoln wanted to help the poor or people who just did not have a lot of money. He would try to encourage his clients to handle their problems out of court, so that they wouldn’t have to spend money that they did not have. He would send people their money back if he believed that they sent him too much and tell them that they were being too nice. Lincoln always said that honesty makes you feel good about yourself and helps build up trust in others.
