Free research paper sample on Abraham Lincoln:
The sixteenth president of the Untied States, Abraham Lincoln, was born in Hodgenville, Kentucky, in a log cabin. During his younger years he worked several jobs and volunteered in the Black Hawk War, in which he became a captain. Lincoln was caring and was a very determined man to make a difference in what he believed was right and then he tried to do what he could do about it. He tried over and over no matter how many times he failed or however many times he lost a debate.
Abraham was regarded at one time as the “Great Emancipator” for his forward strides in freeing the slaves. Abraham Lincoln had several debates with Stephen A. Douglas, known as the Lincoln-Douglas Debates, about slavery.
He was not against slavery itself, but he argued against the extension of slavery into the territories. He was not an abolitionist, even though he morally opposed slavery. In the debates against Douglas, Lincoln attempted to prove that Douglas did not favor political equality for blacks. Even though he lost the debates, they gave him a lot of national attention. While in the legislature, Lincoln made his first public speaking on slavery. He issued the Emancipation Proclamation, on January 1,1863, that declared forever free those slaves within the confederacy. Twenty-three years after Abraham Lincoln and Dan Stone filed a protest and when Lincoln was nominated for president, slavery became a greater issue. When Lincoln was nominated, he said that his protest in the legislature still expressed his position on slavery, even after all of those years.
Although Abraham Lincoln went through many horrible trials and discouraging moments during his life, he was still a very honest, generous, and decent young man. Lincoln was an unsuccessful Illinois lawyer for twenty years, before he became president. The most unsuccessful part was mostly just for financial reasons. Abraham Lincoln wanted to help the poor or people who just did not have a lot of money. He would try to encourage his clients to handle their problems out of court, so that they wouldn’t have to spend money that they did not have. He would send people their money back if he believed that they sent him too much and tell them that they were being too nice. Lincoln always said that honesty makes you feel good about yourself and helps build up trust in others.
Abraham Lincoln was sometimes called a military genius. He became a great wartime leader, making a high command directing the energies and resources of the county. In 1863, he wrote the Gettysburg Address which stated the war’s purpose. Abraham planned for peace and encouraged the Southerners to lay down their arms and join speedily in reunion. At his Second Inaugural, he stated that he was going to change the South and was going to build a harmonious Union. Five days after the war ended, April 14,1865, he was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater, who thought that he would be helping out the South by doing so.
Abraham Lincoln was a good president. He showed people that if you keep trying that you can make a difference in the world. Abraham Lincoln is a wonderful role model, especially if you plan on making a difference in something.
