The scene is set in the streets at nighttime outside Brabantio’s house in a city calledd Venice. Roderigo is angry with Iago because he has given Iago money to set him up with Desdemona but she had already eloped with Othello. Iago hates Othello because he expected to get a promotion but Othello chose Michael Cassio. Iago and Roderigo wake up Brabantio and tell him that Desdemona has eloped with Othello. Brabantio does not want Othello as a son-in-law because he is different in color, age, social background as well as culture.
In act 1 scene 2 Cassio delivers the message that the Duke has sent for Brabantio and Othello. Iago feels like stabbing Roderigo because he says unpleasant things about Othello and he wants Roderigo to think that he likes and admires Othello. Brabantio accused Othello of witch craft because he believes that Desdemonda has good taste and he thinks that it is almost impossible for a girl with such fine taste to fall for a man who is so different. When Brabantio orders Othello to be arrested, Othello acts calm and in control. Othello convinces Brabantio to go to the Duke.

According to Othello, he and Desdemona fell in love when she found his stories exciting. Othello used to visit Brabantio and when he told his stories, Desdemona was impressed. The Duke sends Othello to Cyprus because there is a threat from a Turkish War Fleet. The Duke suggests that Desdemona stays at home with her father but she and her father do not want to so she goes with Othello because she wants to be with him. Iago comforts Roderigo by telling him that there is only an attraction going on between Desdemona and Othello and that Desdemona is young and will soon get sick of Othello. To ruin Othello, Iago comes up with a plan where he will suggest to Othello that Michael Cassio is having an affair with Desdemona. This will ruin the relationship between Desdemona and Othello as well as the closeness between Cassio and Othello.
