Discussion Essay Example

After viewing the Yojimbo and A Fistful of Dollars films, they depict both similarities and differences. The similarities between the two films are confined to the plot. Leone incorporated many of Kurosawa’s plot devices in his movie of A Fistful of Dollars. In Kurosawa’s film, the town is divided between two antagonizing families vying for control. Conversely, in A Fistful of Dollars, the gangs comprise of two families, the Baxters, and Rojos (“Fistful of Dollars-1964,” 2019). This brutal image gives a clear picture of how the heroes can stand up against the challenges they face.

Despite instances of similarities, the films show some different resolutions. For example, at 0.40 minutes we can see that Yojimbo comprises of villain fighting against mechanized thuggery. This is marked by the fall of the heroic age of bushido. This age has individually defeated the existence of better skill and swordsmanship. On the other hand, at 47.01 minutes A Fistful of Dollars streamlines down to the age of the bullet. In this film, we come across two men testing their speed. Based on this observation, Yojimbo shows the skills of the heroes while A Fistful of Dollars dwells on the triumph of cunning (“Yojimbo-1961,” 2019). The Yojimbo movie integrates the order of command of class as well as comedy on social settings. However, this approach is not used in A Fistful of Dollars. Besides, the villain that is demonstrated in Yojimbo utilizes a pistol (0.41 minutes). Conversely, the villain in A Fistful of Dollars, is known as Winchester rifle which can be used to eliminate enemies (47.24 minutes).

Kurosawa is a very innovative filmmaker amid his success abroad. Kurosawa’s myth of Zatoichi sheds light on the Japanese challenges that arise from the gap between youth and preceding generations. He concentrates on the balance between the truth about life and death, and the relationship between the audience and the film.

He deploys comedy to achieve success in work, and his classics have significantly influenced the original Zatoichi. The Yojimbo, which is considered as “Japanese Western,” depicts similarities with American gangster films. The film was produced in the post-defeat decade marked by upheavals of war. Also, the film comes along with the second wave of modernization and post-war economic reconstruction.
