Leadership Style Essay Example

Leadership skills vary from one person to another. This is due to the diverse personalities, priorities, and beliefs in different people. Hypothetically, a leader is defined as a person who has followers courtesy of his/her influence. Leadership involves motivating a group of people in order to achieve a common goal. This can be achieved using a number of leadership styles. Some of the most common leadership styles include autocratic leadership, transformational leadership, bureaucratic leadership, Laissez-faire leadership style, affiliative leadership, authentic leadership, among other leadership styles. One of the most popular and applicable leadership styles is transformational leadership. The transformational leadership is a style of leadership where the leader works in tandem with his/her subordinates so as to identify the changes that need to be implemented, through creating a vision which guides the desired change via inspiration (Northouse, 2018). Mahatma Gandhi and Steve Jobs are some of the world renowned transformational leaders and their leadership styles can be compared.

Mahatma Gandhi and Steve Jobs had some similarities in their leadership styles. The two leaders mostly preferred personalized attention in the ways they attended to their follower’s needs. For instance, Jobs preferred face to face meetings with his followers (Isaacson, 2012. He believed that spontaneous and random discussions were vital in enhancing the creativity among his followers (Isaacson, 2012). Gandhi, on the other hand, related indiscriminately with his followers, regardless of their social classes (Wolpert, 2002). Aside from indiscriminately attending to his followers, Gandhi is also renowned for his intellectual stimulation of his followers. Aside from inspiring their followers, these two leaders practiced idealized influence. Transformational leaders are known to be role models of respect, trust, and high ethical behavior.

Conclusively, Mahatma Gandhi and Steve Jobs are good examples of transformative leaders manifested most of the qualities of transformational leadership. Their attention to their followers was particularly amazing and hence they are role models for today’s leaders to emulate.
