A child with AIDS is not capable of fighting any diseases because of severe immune system damage. It is not curable. It is caused by human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that can be found in the bodily fluid of the person that is infected (breast milk, blood, semen, vaginal secretions).

The number of infected people is continuously increasing in the world. Children with HIV/AIDS experience significant weight loss, health problems, developmental delays (in language, memory, attention, motor functioning, etc.) Such children and their families often experience discrimination, isolation, and prejudice; therefore school staff is encouraged to facilitate acceptance and social adjustment of children in school.

Besides proper treatment, they need to feel that they are not alone; they have to be supported not just be their parents and relatives, but also by their mates and teachers. They need to understand that the fact that they have real troubles does not make them different from others and they deserve the best life, as we all do.
