In the last several years I have traveled more than ever before in my life, with friends and on my own, to remote locations and near-by towns. I enjoyed the urban spirit of New York, historical atmosphere of Boston, night life of LA, smell of the ocean in Miami and wilderness of Alaska. Hobbes has developed very materialistic and, I would say, quite pessimistic philosophy. Hobbes considered people to be merely bodies in motion driven by their sensations and desires. At his times, it was quite a revolution in philosophical thinking and definitely a big step away from the theological approach, according to which everything centers around the sole, not the body. I find Hobbes’ philosophy very interesting, even though I strongly disagree with his views on human beings. I support Hobbes’ criticism, that we should not consider as absolutely equal our bodies, thoughts and emotions.

Ethical conduct becomes central to business success in the 21st century. Consumers are investing in ethical funds, buying from responsible corporations, supporting local producers, and engaging in environmental or anti-globalization activism. Ethics is closely connected to the battle against corruption and for good business practices. The scandals at Enron, WorldCom and Parmalat illustrate the importance of ethical judgment for managers and accountants. Implementation of ethical values, such as honesty, responsibility, fairness, respect, openness, and citizenship are the prerequisite to a company’s success in the contemporary marketplace.

Herbert Gutman was a professor of history at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He was researcher of life of working people and slaves in the USA. Gutman is considered as a one of the founders and supporter of “the new labor history”, which believes that ordinary people don’t receive the proper attention from the historians. He created the critique of the “Commons school” of the labor history which put the attention only on the markets and minimizes the importance of the technological progress and cultural changes in the society.

As a nurse, an undergoing student at Alverno college and a prospective Doctor of Nursing practitioner, I intend to continue walking in the path I started in the summer of 2005. Following more than “two hundred years of industrial vandalism” (Burnham 3), mankind now realizes the vulnerability of the ecosystem. Whereas objective data indicates that many elements of the environment are at their worse conditions since the beginning of measurement (Russel, “Climate Change Accelerates,” n. pag.), shifts in local, national and international policies may bring about some needed changes in the state of the environment. These shifts include, among others, international conventions, measurements to reduce carbon emissions taken by the industrial sector, and the emergence of ecological communities around the world. As a result, some environmental factors such as the Ozone layer (Herro, n. pag.) show a gradual course of improvement.
